The Video VetScope is an electronic, fiber optic otoscope that can be used to better examine and treat animal ears while they are sedated or under light anesthesia. Most animals will not allow good visualization of the lower ear canal when awake because of the pain created. A traditional hand-held otoscope can give a reasonable view of the ear canal. The VetScope actually gives a magnified view using a camera and fiber optics on a computer screen. This allows us to see clearly all the way to the eardrum.
Using special instruments, we can use the VetScope to remove foreign objects, polyps, wax plugs, and to biopsy tumors. We can also thoroughly and safely flush and dry the ear canal. Medication can be instilled into the lower ear and middle ear if necessary.
For animals with very painful, inflamed ears, this is the best way to treat and clear the problem, often long-term, in a painless and thorough manner.
