Electrocardiograms are a procedure which provides a way to measure the electrical activity of an animal’s heart. The most valuable information obtained from an electrocardiogram is a means to determine abnormal heart rhythms which may be dangerous or life-threatening. We usually combine these findings with chest x-rays and cardiac ultrasound to reach a diagnosis. The procedure is easy and painless. Your pet is placed on a table and attached to 3 electrodes. The electrodes create a signal sent to a transmitter that sends the ECG information by telephone to Cardiopet, a specialty service. There, a veterinary cardiologist will interpret the ECG along with the other information we sent, and give us an expert opinion about your pet’s cardiac condition, as well as make treatment recommendations.
